Source Heat Pumps
Can I use a hot water tank to replace the geothermal piping for a water source heat pump used for heat only?
Basically just set the tank thermostat to vacation setting to keep the water lukewarm.
A heat pump moves heat from one place to the other.
It could be done with the water heater but you would be limited to the amount of heat that could be produced by the heat pump by the BTU capacity of the water heater.
If your heat pump were a 5 ton(12,000 BTU x 5 = 60,000 BTU) and your water heater were gas (typical BTU might be 40,000 BTU) you would be pulling more heat from the water heater than it can provide.
It would be more efficient to move the hot water from the water heater through a hot water coil or baseboard or in slab tubing than to produce the heat with the water heater and use a heat pump to transfer that heat.
The thing with the geothermal is your picking up free heat from the ground and compressing it to a higher temperature to be used for heating.
The same with the air source heat pump, it picks up free heat from the outdoor air and compresses it to a higher usable temperature. The only thing with the outdoor air is it fluctuates more than ground temperatures and when it’s colder there is less heat to be picked up.
You need a free heat source to make it feasible.
