How Much Do Commercial Heat Pumps Cost?
What are commercial geothermal heat pumps and how much do they cost? For starters, geothermal heat pumps go by many other names. They are often called ground source heat pumps, earth coupled systems or water source heat pumps. The most common names in usage are geothermal heat pumps and ground source heat pumps. A geothermal heat pump is usually both a Heating And Cooling system that uses the year-round stable temperature of the earth to either heat or cool a building. With these systems, heating costs are about 50% lower than those of standard heat pumps; cooling costs are about 35% lower and overall energy bills are about 35 to 40% lower. Although geothermal heat pumps cost twice as much as traditional Heating Systems, the start-up cost is redeemed in about 3 to 6 years. After this period customers save money because of lower energy bills and maintenance costs.
Closed-loop commercial heat pumps use a loop filled with water and antifreeze solution to channel the energy of the earth into heating or cooling a building. The loop initiates from the place to be heated and returns to it as-well. In the heating mode, the water in loop is colder than the ground causing the heat from the ground to naturally diffuse into the loop. The now-warm water enters the heat exchanger at the end of the loop where its heat is absorbed by the refrigerant gas. The cold water circulates back into the loop while the energy-rich refrigerant leaves the Geothermal Heat Exchanger and enters the compressor where it rises in temperature. The refrigerant then travels to the ‘air’ heat exchanger where air is ultimately warmed and circulated through-out the building; the low-energy refrigerant returns to the geothermal heat exchanger. A similar process takes place in reverse to cool the building.
The cost of commercial heat pumps is low given that they require very little maintenance when compared with conventional systems. In terms of longevity, the life of a geothermal heat pump is twice that of a conventional system; the internal components and ground loop are good for about 20 and 50 years, respectively. Geothermal heat pumps increase the real estate market price of a building while lowering operational costs and environmental damage. Because renewable energy driven heat pumps have an extremely small impact on the environment, government programs, such as the Renewable Heat Incentive, are underway to subsidize their adoption. Non-domestic renewable energy owners will be eligible for cash payments starting July 2011. Domestic owners will follow suit in October 2012. The rates will vary based on the size and scale of the renewable energy system in use.
